- Cook Government allocates $100,000 to assist in developing a detailed precinct plan for the future of Bunbury's Bicentennial Square
- Builds on significant investment in the revitalisation of the South West city
Regional Development Minister Don Punch has announced $100,000 towards creating a detailed precinct plan to transform Bunbury's Bicentennial Square into a thriving destination, building on wider revitalisation efforts taking place across the city.
Located between the city centre and Leschenault Inlet, the underutilised public space has the potential to become a vibrant community space, attracting locals and visitors into the heart of Western Australia's second city.
The funding will support the City of Bunbury, in partnership with the South West Development Commission, to develop a precinct plan for the renewal of the central site that will reenergise the area and create an attractive town square.
The project will review the current function of this strategic site, look at options for enhancing connectivity to the Leschenault Inlet, other activation opportunities, and improved safety and functionality.
Information obtained during this process will be used to inform how Bicentennial Square will be best used and enhanced for the Bunbury community into the future.
The Bunbury community will be able to provide input into planning for this important civic asset.
As stated by Regional Development Minister Don Punch:
"Bunbury is transforming; with new life breathed into outdated and underutilised areas of the city in recent years.
"From the waterfront to the area around the Leschenault Inlet, greatly enhanced community spaces have been delivered for the benefit of the community and visitors.
"I am pleased to announce further funding towards the revitalisation of the city, again working with the City of Bunbury and building on significant investment by the Cook Government in the renewal of Western Australia's second city.
"The aim is to create a true 'town square' that will be an asset for Bunbury a place for people and community that supports business activity. But we need to put in the planning first to make sure we get this right and this is what the funding will do."
