Council Seeks Community Input On Street Naming

Devonport City Council Tasmania

Devonport City Council announces a public consultation to expand the selection of street names for roads in Devonport, inviting community participation. This public consultation will open on Monday, 6 May 2024.

As new subdivisions emerge in Devonport, there is a significant opportunity to infuse local culture, heritage, and values into the names of our streets and roads. Under the Placenames Act 2020, the process of naming roads includes approval from Placenames Tasmania, a State Government body managed by the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania. To assist developers and ensure compliance with the Act, Council provides a list of pre-approved road names for consideration.

"Given the limited number of names currently on our list, we are reaching out to the community for suggestions to expand on the options available," Devonport Mayor Alison Jarman said.

"Community members can suggest new road names and let us know why they're important to them."
