Fatal crash after atempted intercept - Tarneit

Detectives from Major Collision Investigation Group are en route to the scene of a fatal crash which occurred after an attempted police intercept in Tarneit, Victoria Police say.

Investigators have been told that members from a specialist squad attempted to intercept a car on Tarneit Road about 4am.

As they activated their lights officers saw a flash inside the vehicle which then left the roadway and crashed into a building, causing the building to catch fire.

The driver got out of the car but only managed to get a short distance away from the blaze.

Police attempted to rescue the man but were driven back by the fire.

Emergency crews attended and extinguished the fire but the driver died at the scene.

An investigation into the incident has commenced and will be oversighted by Professional Standards Command as per normal procedure.

Tarneit Road is expected to be closed for most of the day.
