The colourful mural, spanning 20 metres wide, is part of the $5.72 million upgrade of Charles Heath Reserve in Five Dock, set to officially open in June 2024.
"To have an artist of Fintan Magee's calibre bring a new piece to Five Dock is a fantastic outcome for our community," City of Canada Bay Mayor Michael Megna said.
Located next to Five Dock Leisure Centre, the previously underused space will feature a brand-new adventure playground, picnic shelters, barbecues, and more.
"The upgrade of Charles Heath Reserve represents a significant investment in our growing community, providing much-needed green, open space and recreation facilities," Mayor Megna said.
"Fintan's artwork not only celebrates Five Dock's rich heritage but adds vibrancy and colour to our new space. We are thrilled to welcome an artist of his calibre to the City of Canada Bay."
Magee is celebrated for his large, realistic murals painted on buildings worldwide, from Australian wheat silos to towers in Mumbai and Berlin apartments.
The new mural, 'Windows through Five Dock' draws inspiration from the stained-glass windows found on the churches of Italy's Aeolian islands.
"The new work features a patchwork of colour and stories, inspired by the beautiful stained-glass windows of Aeolian churches," said Magee.
"The string of images tells the story of Five Dock, its gardens, native plants, and culture, with each panel acting as a window into a different aspect of the community."
The artwork includes an image of a volcanic eruption, referencing how ongoing volcanic activity led large numbers of Aeolian Italians to migrate to Australian suburbs such as Five Dock.
The City of Canada Bay plans to officially open the Charles Heath Reserve Community and Play Space to the community in June 2024.
The project is proudly funded by the NSW Government in association with the City of Canada Bay.
