Last November, Bayside residents turned their unwanted items into cash during the annual Garage Sale Trail, generating more than $35,700 and extending the life of over 44,300 kilograms of pre-loved items, which would otherwise have gone to landfill.
One Bayside participant said it was an "amazingly successful day making friends' and the 'community was very happy".
In Australia, about 6,000 kgs of clothing and textiles are thrown out every 10 minutes. By participating in the secondhand economy, including donating and purchasing from opportunity shops (op shops) or participating in events like the Garage Sale Trail, we can reduce the amount of reusable goods going to landfill.

- If you're shopping for clothes, identify the gaps in your wardrobe and write a list. Walking in without a plan can be overwhelming!
- Sizes can be misleading, especially if something is vintage, so make sure to browse all the size ranges.
- Try everything on!
- Don't forget you can purchase secondhand furniture, toys, kitchen equipment, books and more.
