Geelong On Rise: Clever & Creative International City

A plan that seeks to support a further 55,000 new jobs to the region, increase our Gross Regional Product by $9.7 billion by 2041 and attract 120,000 people is available for community consultation.

The draft 2024-2034 Economic Development Plan - 'Geelong on the Rise: A Clever & Creative International City' is open for engagement on the City's HaveYour Say page until 5pm Wednesday 22 May.

Community members, business owners, local organisations and other stakeholders are encouraged to share their insights on the draft plan that aims to continue growing, diversifying and future proofing our economy.

Over the past decade, Greater Geelong has undergone remarkable growth, boasting the fastest population growth in Victoria and second fastest in Australia, the largest regional economy in the state, and the fastest jobs growth of all Australian regional cities.

The 10-year plan has been guided by more than 100 local businesses, industry representative groups and key stakeholders who identified the region's competitive advantages, opportunities, barriers and challenges.

Specific actions and initiatives to deliver on Our Community Plan 2021-25 are detailed in the plan. It establishes the direction for the next significant evolution in the local economy - to become an international clever and creative city.

Geelong on the Rise is centred around four core strategies:

  1. Positioning Geelong;
  2. Collaboration and Support;
  3. Talent Attraction and Development; and
  4. Planning and Advocacy

The draft plan aims to deliver:

  • a more sustainable economy that is based on circular economy principles;
  • an innovative economy where knowledge and talent are the most significant assets;
  • a diversified economy that is resilient and adaptive, even to sudden changes; and
  • a future-focused economy that defines new trends.

The City will explore the opportunities, strengths and weaknesses in establishing an Economic Development Advisory Board and present these options to Council at its August meeting.

Mayor Trent Sullivan

Geelong on the Rise is about a sustained elevation and evolution of the Geelong economy.

Greater Geelong has all the ingredients required to be a significant economic player nationally and internationally, with our strategic location, industrial infrastructure, innovative mindset, thriving community and beautiful natural environment.

The draft 2024-2034 Economic Development Plan represents a significant step towards realising our long-term vision of becoming a prosperous, sustainable, innovative, and creative city-region.

We are seeking to capitalise on emerging growth industries and provide more equitable and inclusive economic development to ensure the entire community benefits from future growth.

Deputy Mayor Anthony Aitken

The plan celebrates our past and identifies our economic future.

It builds on the rich diversity of industry clusters that will underpin Geelong's success for years to come.

Council aspires to be a leader and partner to key industry, government and stakeholder bodies to ensure the success of the Economic Development Plan.
