Riders and spectators from around Australia will converge on the Region this weekend for the 22nd annual Paradise Lagoons Campdraft.
The Paradise Lagoons Campdraft Association received $10,000 towards the event during round two of Council's 2023/24 Community Assistance Program (CAP).
Communities and Heritage Councillor Drew Wickerson said it was great to see Paradise Lagoons Campdraft among the list of deserving local organisations and events being supported by this initiative.
"This weekend's campdraft is anticipated to draw a crowd of up to 10,000 attendees over the course of four exhilarating days of competition," Cr Wickerson said.
"For an event like this which attracts thousands of spectators to its first-class facilities, there is tremendous positive economic impact on local businesses, hotels and restaurants.
"The success of CAP funding has led to a rise in the popularity of these events each year, along with the numerous benefits they bring to our community.
"In round two of the 2023/24 program, Council proudly supported and provided assistance to 30 local community events and programs by contributing over $109,000 in funding."
Paradise Lagoons Campdraft President Tom Acton said the campdraft attracts competitors from around Australia with this year's event featuring riders from Queensland, Northern Territory and New South Wales, ranging in age from as young as eight to 70 years old.
"The nominations are strong this year, we've got 1,500 first round nominations which equals to roughly 250 competitors," Mr Acton said.
"The funding is integral to the running of our event, and we appreciate Council's support.
"Our event, held 15km from Rockhampton, is a great way of showcasing the sport and the town. There are plenty of flow on effects and economic benefits for the locals and the Region."
Among the highlights scheduled to take place over four full days of competition, is the popular ladies luncheon and the State of Origin Campdraft, both taking place on Saturday.
"In the State of Origin challenge, we've got 10 riders for both our Queensland and New South Wales teams so they can battle it out in front of a large crowd," Mr Acton said.
"We expect Saturday to be a big night in addition to our ladies luncheon earlier in the afternoon which is already a sold-out event.
"Entry to the event is a gold coin donation towards the Royal Flying Doctor Service and free camping is also available."
