Working Collaboratively To Respond To Family Violence

Guy Barnett, Attorney General

A range of government and non-government organisations who work with individuals and families affected by, or at risk of, family violence will come together for a series of interactive information sessions over the next two weeks.

The Into the Loop sessions, presented by the Department of Justice, provide an opportunity for attendees to learn about the role each partner plays within Safe at Home.

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Guy Barnett, said that collaboration was needed to overcome the scourge that is family violence.

"Family violence is unacceptable in any form, and we must work together to support victim-survivors, their children, and families," the Attorney-General said.

"As a society we must hold perpetrators to account for their behaviour through the criminal justice system, behaviour change programs and education.

"Safe at Home is a holistic service system with established processes and networks to improve safety and security for victim-survivors, ensure perpetrators are accountable for their behaviour and reduce the incidence of family violence in the long term.

"By bringing everyone into the loop we can enhance the combined efforts of both government and non-government organisations to better outcomes for Tasmanians and take action on family violence."

Minister for Women and the Prevention of Family Violence, Madeleine Ogilvie, said that any steps to end family violence was welcome.

"These sessions are important and it is pleasing to see they are well attended. Our Government takes very seriously our obligation to do all we can to address family violence and keep women safe. I support the Attorney-General in this endeavor," Minister Ogilvie said.

The first session was held in Hobart today with events in the North and Northwest to follow next week.

The Safe at Home service system is underpinned by the Family Violence Act 2004 and is operated in partnership by Department of Justice, Department of Police, Fire and Emergency Management, Department of Health, Department for Education, Children and Young People, Department of Premier and Cabinet and Tasmania Legal Aid to achieve its objectives.
