Today, the Environmental Protection Agency released a final power plant rule that will ensure the longest running coal-fire plants and new natural gas plants control 90% of their carbon pollution. World Wildlife Fund (WWF) issued the following statement from Marcene Mitchell, senior vice president of climate change:
"This is strong action to regulate coal and gas plant emissions, which is an essential step towards meeting our climate goals. However, it's deeply concerning that some types of generation, such as existing gas facilities, are not yet addressed. This omission leaves significant uncertainty about how emissions from existing gas plants will be addressed, undermining our efforts to fully address the climate crisis. A piecemeal approach isn't going to get us there.
"The Biden Administration has a responsibility to set a clear direction for how fossil fuels will be phased out. They have delivered comprehensive action before, and we expect comprehensive action now, not one undermined by loopholes. We need bold, clear, and decisive action to create a healthy, sustainable climate future for all, right now."
