One of the best rainforest walks in NSW, the Wonga Walk in Dorrigo National Park, re-opened this week following a $1.1 million upgrade, thanks to funding from the NSW Government and the Australian Government's COVID-19 Relief and Recovery Fund.
National Parks and Wildlife Service Area Manager Glenn Storrie said the just completed first stage of the work make it easier for people of all ages and abilities to enjoy the spectacular rainforest walk.
"With more than 150,000 people visiting the national park each year, the Wonga Walk is one of the most popular walks, not only in Dorrigo National Park, but across all of Australia.
"The trail winds through ancient Gondwanan rainforest, past 600-year-old trees and cascading waterfalls.
"We want to provide opportunities for more people in our community to visit and enjoy this wild and pristine World Heritage-listed area," said Mr Storrie.
"Stage 1 of the upgrades included widening and renewing the track from the Dorrigo Rainforest Centre to the Glade picnic area.
"The track has been resealed and passing bays, signage and a new rainforest viewing platform installed to give visitors the chance to pause, rest and fully immerse themselves in the ancient rainforest experience," said Mr Storrie.
Stage 2 works will continue into 2022 with the re-furnishment of the Walk with the Birds boardwalk which is due for completion in June 2022.
The upgrades will also enhance the experience for school and tour groups by providing additional education spaces along the track.
