Byron Shire Council has welcomed news that the NSW Government has allocated $1.588 million as part of the Fixing Local Roads Program, to do major work on Left Bank Road near Mullumbimby.
Left Bank Road is a narrow, dead-end road that winds up into the hinterland and is the only access for more than 50 properties, hinterland businesses and the Shearwater Steiner School.
"Since the floods last year, Left Bank Road has deteriorated significantly and this much-needed grant will allow Council to reseal some sections of the road, and where appropriate do some heavy patching and drainage work," Phil Holloway, Director Infrastructure Services, said.
"This will mean that people can get to and from work, the shops, school and generally go about their daily lives, much easier than they currently can," Mr Holloway said.
"Importantly it will improve the response time for emergency services such as the Rural Fire Service, SES, police and ambulance," he said.
The Fixing Local Roads grant will allow for remediation of approximately 2.9 kms of Left Bank Road.
The work plan is now being prepared and it is hoped the work will start in the second half of 2023.
Council is also in the process of applying for natural disaster funding for reconstruction work on Left Bank Road culverts, causeways and drainage following the 2022 floods.
