Wingecarribee Shire Council has secured a $1.5 million grant from the NSW Government to build a new detention basin at the Bowral Golf Course. This project is a major step forward in protecting homes and businesses downstream from flooding, particularly in the Beaven Place area.
The basin will act like a temporary storage tank, holding excess water during heavy rain and releasing it slowly, significantly reducing the severity of future flood events.
"This project is crucial for the safety and well-being of our community," said Council's Director Service and Project Delivery, Karin Targa. "The NSW Government's funding is a significant contribution, and we look forward to working with the Bowral Golf Club to ensure the project is completed smoothly."
Council is committed to minimising disruptions to the golf course during construction. Discussions are ongoing regarding the final design and construction timeline to ensure continued playability and access to the full 18 holes.
Council has worked collaboratively with the Bowral Golf Club Limited (BGCL) throughout the design process, spanning several years. While generally supportive of the project's objective to enhance flood resilience for the wider community, the BGCL is seeking discussions regarding compensation for the formalisation of the easement and potential disruptions during construction.
Council is committed to open communication and collaboration with the BGCL to address their concerns and ensure a mutually beneficial outcome. This includes minimising disruptions to the golfing experience and ensuring continued access to the full 18 holes during the construction phase.
The Bowral Golf Course Detention Basin project is part of the Bowral Floodplain Risk Management Strategy, aiming to improve flood resilience in the area.
