$1.6M Boost Revives Youth, Community Facilities

  • Three youth-focused community projects in Piara Waters and Harrisdale completed
  • New outdoor and indoor facilities provide places for locals of all ages to create and recreate
  • $1.6 million worth of WA Labor Government election commitments delivered

Three major recreation projects in Perth's south-eastern suburbs have now been completed, delivering $1.6 million in WA Labor Government election commitments.

The projects include the redevelopment and upgrade of the Piara Waters Library, Burtonia Gardens in Piara Waters and Yellowwood Park in Harrisdale.

The Piara Waters Library redevelopment, completed in August, received a $1 million election commitment in 2021 towards the construction of a new recreational youth space.

The space features a multiplayer gaming area, an immersive creative zone with innovative computer software, audiovisual, filmmaking, podcasting and music production equipment, and a live zone with a lounge area and kitchen.

The new facilities offer areas for collaboration and quiet reflection, alongside community meeting rooms which are available for hire.

Together with a contribution from the City of Armadale, $9.3 million was invested in the transformative community project.

The Cook Labor Government also contributed $400,000 towards the creation of a family-friendly recreational space for the Piara Waters community, with the addition of youth-orientated equipment and park amenities at Burtonia Gardens.

This project was further supported by an $80,000 contribution from the City of Armadale.

The recently completed project includes:

  • installation of a cricket net;
  • improvements to existing basketball amenities;
  • new playground equipment with additional shade;
  • new shelter and picnic areas;
  • a drink fountain and barbeque;
  • new connecting pathways; and
  • improved landscaping and trees.

Work is also now complete on improvements to nearby Yellowwood Park, which deliver a family-friendly recreational space for the Harrisdale community, with a focus on youth-orientated spaces and equipment.

The Cook Labor Government funded the project's total cost of $200,000.

The Yellowwood Park improvements include:

  • youth-focused park upgrades;
  • a new parkour fitness area;
  • turf mound hangout spaces;
  • study pods;
  • outdoor hammocks;
  • new park amenities;
  • improved landscapes and new trees; and
  • better-connected pathways.

As stated by Local Government Minister Hannah Beazley:

"The Cook Labor Government is pleased to support local governments in Western Australia in their efforts to improve community facilities and amenities for residents, such as our $1.6 million investment in these three important projects in Piara Waters and Harrisdale.

"Many of the new indoor and outdoor spaces created have a focus on youth with the aim of providing support, opportunity, connection, wellbeing, resilience and innovation.

"The new facilities will have a positive impact on local communities by providing places for people to create and recreate."

As stated by Sport and Recreation Minister David Templeman:

"It's a high priority of the Cook Labor Government to create and improve recreational facilities throughout WA and, in many cases, join forces with local governments to get projects off the ground and turned into reality.

"These three extremely worthwhile projects that received Government funding support are now valuable assets for not just local youth, but also service the wider community."

As stated by Jandakot MLA Yaz Mubarakai:

"This $1.6 million investment in the Piara Waters and Harrisdale communities is set to benefit locals of all ages for years to come, and I am so pleased to see these three important projects delivered.

"These new indoor and outdoor facilities are family friendly and designed with youth in mind, to encourage our young people to stay active and help them feel further connected to their local community."

As stated by City of Armadale Mayor Ruth Butterfield:

"The City of Armadale is grateful for the continued support from the State Government, as we continue to upgrade and improve the facilities in our local parks.

"As the City of Armadale continues to grow, we are focused on ensuring all of our suburbs have great facilities and parks for our residents and visitors to enjoy."
