The City of Casey welcomes the Federal Labor Government's announcement on Sunday 30 March that they will commit $10.68 million towards a Mini-Stadium and Women's Centre for Excellence at Casey Fields in Cranbourne East, should they be re-elected in the upcoming Federal Election.
Casey Mayor Stefan Koomen joined Deputy Mayor Cr Melinda Ambros; Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government the Hon. Catherine King MP; Federal Member for Holt Cassandra Fernando MP; Melbourne City FC CEO Brad Rowse; and Melbourne Storm CEO Justin Rodski for the announcement.
The election commitment will fund the complete fit out of a grandstand, lights, scoreboard, pitch, other amenities and landscaping.
Cr Koomen said this exciting announcement will mean new sporting opportunities for women and girls in soccer, rugby league and rugby union right here in Casey.
"On behalf of Casey, we welcome this fantastic commitment towards a facility that will really put Casey on the map as a destination for elite sports," Cr Koomen said.
"This project has long been an advocacy priority for the City of Casey, and this funding commitment will see this facility be able to host sporting events with a capacity of up to 5,000 spectators.
"It is a big step towards realising our vision for a 10,000-spectator facility in the long term."
Cr Melinda Ambros said women's sport continues to grow, and with the right investment, it has the potential to drive many benefits in our community.
"By supporting women's sport, you are supporting stronger communities, economic benefits and just a more equitable sporting environment. This incredible new facility will help bring all of this to the Casey community," Cr Ambros said.
"We want to empower young girls in our community to envision a future in sport - whether as players, coaches, leaders, or supporters."
The recent announcement, together with the $43.29 million already invested by the City of Casey and Melbourne City FC will see the development and construction of the precinct. The Victorian Government has also contributed $5 million.
The City of Casey welcomes funding commitments from the opposition and other parties - securing a commitment for the Mini Stadium and Women's Centre for Excellence, regardless of who takes parliament this year brings benefits for the Casey community.
Council partners of the project include Melbourne City FC, Melbourne Storm, Federation University and Casey Warriors.
