The Albanese Government is helping thousands of older people in rural and remote communities stay closer to loved ones by expanding the Multi-Purpose Service (MPS) program as recommended by the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety.
Following a competitive application process in late 2024, an additional 102 residential care places have been allocated to approved providers operating across New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia.
These new places will allow for the expansion of 10 existing MPS sites. Importantly, they will also facilitate the creation of 3 new MPS in rural and remote Australia.
Approximately 5,000 people every year already get access to the aged care services that they need through their local MPS. Continuing to expand the MPS program will help to improve access to quality and safe residential aged care services in these areas of Australia, enabling older people to stay in their local communities.
The MPS program is a joint initiative of the Albanese Government, and state and territory governments. The program provides integrated health and aged care services to rural and remote communities that cannot support a separate aged care home and hospital.
There are currently 3,796 residential care places funded by the Commonwealth for the MPS program, with 29 providers delivering MPS services at 183 sites across Australia.
