1,000 Days Since Russia's Full-Scale Ukraine Invasion

Global Affairs Canada

The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement:

"A thousand days ago, Russia escalated its war on Ukraine into a brutal, full-scale invasion. Russia's President Vladimir Putin thought a victory would be swift and decisive.

"President Putin was wrong, just as his claims to be protecting people in Ukraine have been proven utterly false. Russia's invasion is nothing more than a land and resource grab, an attempt to redraw internationally recognized borders by force. Instead of protecting Ukrainians, Russia has, for a thousand days, inflicted death and injury upon countless Ukrainians, torn apart families, illegally deported Ukrainian children, destroyed homes and devastated communities. Russia has committed grave human rights abuses, including war crimes, crimes against humanity and despicable acts of sexual violence against innocent people.

"This prolonged war has also had far-reaching global impacts, affecting the global economy and food security. Russia's flagrant disregard for the territorial integrity of a sovereign nation has undermined the very foundations of international security. This is a threat not just to Ukraine and the region but to global security. It is a threat to us all.

"Against this brutal aggression, Ukraine has shown incredible resilience and determination in defending its land, culture and people. The spirit, strength and ingenuity of Ukrainians have inspired people around the world and reinforced our commitment to stand with Ukraine.

"As we solemnly mark 1,000 days of full-scale invasion, Canada stands resolute in its commitment to supporting Ukraine in defending its people and its sovereignty and territorial integrity from Russia's brutal aggression. Our support for Ukraine will endure, as we work toward a future built on lasting peace, justice and respect for international norms.
