$100M to Boost EV Fast Charging, Slash Emissions

The Albanese Government is rolling out more EV fast chargers and driving down climate pollution in the transport sector with a $100 million investment through the Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC).

The finance will help Ampol roll out a number of initiatives including EV charging, hydrogen refuelling infrastructure, solar PV and developing low carbon liquid fuels.

Ampol expects to deliver more than 200 new public DC fast charging bays across its service station network by 2025 because of this finance.

Ampol will also direct some of the finance to support its renewable fuels programs, including the recently announced feasibility study into a significant renewable fuels production facility at Ampol's Lytton Refinery in Brisbane, for production of low carbon liquid fuels including Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel.

Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Chris Bowen, said the CEFC investment is delivering more fast EV charging for Australia's booming EV fleet.

"There are more than 200,000 EVs on our roads, with more and more choice of affordable to buy and run EVs coming into the market.

"Under the Albanese Government there are now 22 EV models selling for under $60,000 in Australia, up from 14 models in 2022.

"With more Australians opting for cheaper-to-run EVs we need to make sure we're keeping up with demand for charging. We've already seen growth in EV charging locations from 464 in December 2022 to around 900 at the beginning of 2024.

"This $100 million investment from the CEFC will help continue the Albanese Government's work to make sure EV drivers have access to charging where and when they need it."

Transport currently contributes about 23% of Australia's total greenhouse gas emissions, projected to be Australia's largest source of greenhouse gas emissions by 2028.Getting more EVs on the road will help us meet our emissions target and deliver us cleaner air, as well as cheaper to run cars.

The CEFC initiative aims to accelerate sustainable practices in the transport sector, supporting Australia's immediate and long-term emissions reduction goals.
