$10M Boost to Enhance School Crossing Safety

Additional $10 million to expand School Zones and Crossing Program
Funding will enable safety improvements at 165 school warden crossings
Investment will be delivered as part of the 2024-25 State Budget
40km/h speed limit expanded to warden crossings outside designated school zones

With Term Two of the school year commencing in less than a week, the Cook Government has announced it will invest $10 million to improve safety at warden-controlled school crossings across the State.

The investment will allow for the expansion of the 40km/h speed limit to all warden-controlled school crossings that fall outside of existing designated school zones.

Across Western Australia, there are approximately 165 warden-controlled crossings that fall outside of the 40km/h school zone speed limit area.

The $10 million investment will support installation of electronic speed limit signage at sites where current speed limits are 60 km/h or above (93 locations) and static signage where speed limits are 50 km/h (72 locations).

The 40km/h speed limit would align with existing school zone periods 7.30am to 9am and 2.30pm to 4pm during school terms.

The changes will mean all warden-controlled school crossings in WA will be located within 40km/h speed zones during school pick up and drop off.

The program will be implemented on a targeted schedule over coming years with the below sites identified as priorities for electronic signage this year:

Australian Islamic College Kewdale Campus Orrong Road, near Corser Street;
Australind Primary School/Senior High School Paris Road, near Barnes Avenue;
Banksia Grove Primary School Joondalup Drive, near Parakeelya Road;
Churchlands Senior High School Pearson Road, near Hale Road;
Highgate Primary School - William Street, near Lincoln Street;Joseph Banks Secondary College Pinjar Road, near Splendens Avenue;
Kardinya Primary School two crossing locations on North Lake Road, near Le Souef Drive and South Street, near Pinewood Avenue;
Kent Street Senior High School Berwick Street, near Rathay Street;
Richmond Primary School Canning Highway, near Windsor Road;
Safety Bay Senior High School Read Street, near Malibu Road; and
West Busselton Primary School Bussell Highway, two crossing locations, near Johnston Avenue and Fairway Drive.

Main Roads will deliver the program with funding provided through the Road Safety Commission's Road Trauma Trust Account.

As stated by Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:

"This program is pivotal to ensure increased safety for school children going to and from schools, as well as for our wardens.

"Expanding the program to reducing speeds to 40 km/h at children's crossings outside of the existing school zones emphasises our commitment to prioritising the safety of our most vulnerable road users.

"Creating safer road environments encourages parents and children to embrace more active modes of travel to and from school."

As stated by Minister for Road Safety David Michael:

"I am pleased to be able to work in collaboration with Main Roads and WA Police on this important safety initiative.

"Importantly the $10 million is being made available from the Road Trauma Trust Account, which means fines from speed and red-light cameras are being used to improve road safety for some of our most vulnerable road users."
