June is Pride month.
It's dedicated to the celebration and commemoration of the LGBT community. Pride marches began after the Stonewall riots, a sad day in our history when police raided a known gathering place, the Stonewall Inn, in New York. The following year, marches in the form of protest, started a pivotal shift for LGBT rights across the globe.
We are a long way from that day in 1969 but we still have so far to go. Some of the horrendous comments on social media are proof of this. However, we are lucky to have some fantastic supporters and local organisations who continue the work to make sure the rainbow community can feel safe and supported. Part of that is being able to feel open and free to express yourself as you wish without fear or judgement.
Last year saw the Central Goldfields very first Pride Festival which was a great success. That is continuing this year with the hard work of some dedicated people and the kind support from organisations like Mill House, Council, The Station, and Rotary to name a few.
This year's event - now known as Outburst - will have an evening function at The Station Café Restaurant Bar on Friday 21st June from 6.30pm followed by a day festival at Mill House on Saturday 22nd from 11am to 4pm. Our Gallery will also host a Solstice and Sparkle event at the Gallery on Friday 21st June from 3.45 to 5pm. Check out the website for full details – www.outburst.au
