12 KI Researchers Among World's Most Cited

Twelve researchers with links to Karolinska Institutet are included in the 2024 list of the world's most cited researchers, compiled by Clarivate, the company behind the Web of Science database. The list includes more than 6,600 researchers from 59 countries and regions. In Sweden, researchers from KI are at the top.

The analysis for the annual list of "Highly Cited Researchers" is, simplified, based on the 0.1 percent most cited articles on the Web of Science database from leading journals between 2013-2023.

The Web of Science database contains references from over 12,000 scientific journals in all subject areas as well as information about citations and references between the articles.

Researchers from 1,200 institutions

Researchers are evaluated in specific research areas or in an interdisciplinary category. They represent more than 1,200 institutions in 59 countries and regions.

The extensive evaluation and selection process is based on data from the Web of Science Core Collection citation index, as well as analysis by subject matter experts at Clarivate.

China is increasing and the US is losing

According to the press release from Clarivate, researchers at universities in China and Hong Kong have increased in share on the list, while the United States has lost slightly compared to previous years but retains its top position as a country. In third place on the list of countries is the United Kingdom.

Among Swedish universities, Karolinska Institutet is at the top, after the University of Gothenburg.
