16 Charged in Operation Fume: Alcohol, Drug Offenses

NSW Police have charged 16 people, and 29 drivers returned positive drug tests, during a high-visibility road traffic operation in the Southern Region at the weekend.

Operation Fume ran on Saturday 15 February 2025, targeting drug and alcohol-driving offences, and general road compliance across The Hume, Lake Illawarra, Wollongong, South Coast and Monaro Police Districts.

The high-visibility operation involved officers attached to Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, supported by general duties officers from the local commands.

The operation utilised mobile and stationary random breath testing, random drug testing and proactive patrols of known 'hot spots' within the regions.

In total, 2423 breath tests were conducted and eight people were charged with drink-driving offences, while 262 roadside drug tests were conducted, with 29 drivers returning positive drug tests. The licences of all drivers returning a positive roadside drug test were suspended for 24 hours, with further action against those awaiting secondary results.

Another eight people were charged for a number of offences including three people for driving while disqualified. Seven penalty notices were issued, three people searched and three vehicles searched.

Incidents of note,

About 12:38am yesterday (Sunday 16 February 2025), officers attached to Traffic and Highway Patrol Command detected a P2 license holder allegedly travelling on the Hume Highway, Goulburn at 152km/hr in a 100km/hr zone. The 18-year-old female driver was issued with a traffic infringement notice for P2 driver exceed speed> 45km/hr and her license was suspended.

About 11.05pm, on a Saturday 15 February 2025, officers attached to Traffic and Highway Patrol Command stopped a 17-year-old male driver on Windang Rd Windang. The 43-year-old woman in the passenger seat, supervising the learner driver allegedly returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.162. She was issued with a field court attendance notice for High Range PCA and will appear in Kiama Local Court at a later date. Her license was suspended.
