Surf Coast Shire Council supports the '16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign', welcoming Dans Bain and her artwork 'The Lost Petition' to Torquay on Monday 2 December 2024.
The '16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence' is an international campaign to challenge violence against women and girls. The campaign runs annually from 25 November (International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) to 10 December (Human Rights Day).
'The Lost Petition' is an ongoing textile artwork listing the women and children who have lost their lives to male violence in Australia from 2008. Measuring over 30 metres long, and growing, this simple artwork serves as a powerful reminder about gender based violence. The artwork aims to connect communities, spark discussion, and inspire positive action, as real change comes from community led action.
'The Lost Petition' will be unrolled on Polworth Oval, Torquay, and will be filmed. A video will be made about the artwork and will be shared on social media pages.
"The Lost Petition sparks conversations in the community and brings home the reminder that there is still a lot be done to make sure all women and children are safe in their community," said Mayor, Cr Mike Bodsworth.
"Let's keep the conversations going and make sure we are shining a light on this topic at every opportunity. We need to make sure we create a future where people feel safe, equal and respected," he said.
"Thank you to Dans Bain and the Torquay Community House for bringing this artwork to Torquay during the 16 Days of Activism period."
