The Australian Government is investing $17.48 million in council-led projects in Queensland. The projects will contribute to the protection and resilience of the Great Barrier Reef.
The Reef Guardian Councils program recognises that local actions are central to better managing the Reef region. It encourages greater community participation and involvement, including with First Nations people.
This funding is supporting a range of projects that contribute to the delivery of the Reef 2050 Long-term Sustainability Plan, by:
- reducing sediment run-off
- improving riparian, catchment and wetland habitats
- removing marine debris
- controlling threats such as feral species
- reducing carbon emissions.
The program is a partnership between local governments and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority.
