Toowoomba Region Mayor Geoff McDonald has welcomed the announcement of $1.9 million in funding towards a significant upgrade project at Kearneys Spring Recreation Reserve.
Funding was announced on Thursday, August 1 as part of the first tranche of projects funded under the SEQ Liveability Fund.
Mayor McDonald said the funding was timely as Council had broken ground on the Kearneys Springs Clubhouse project recently.
"Council welcomes this opportunity to work with the Australian and Queensland governments to boost our grassroots sporting facilities like the Kearneys Spring Recreation Reserve," Mayor McDonald said.
"This funding shows what can happen when all levels of government work together to develop our communities."
Demolition began on the old Kearneys Spring Recreation Reserve amenities block last month with construction of a new building expected to be finished by the end of the year.
The new building will include a canteen, toilets, player and unisex changerooms with moveable walls to allow for different configurations, a multi-purpose room and storage areas.
"Drive past Kearneys Spring Recreation Reserve when sport is being played and you see literally hundreds of families at the ground. Kearneys Spring is a fantastic facility," Mayor McDonald said.
"This funding isn't just a physical investment in bricks and mortar infrastructure. Sport adds so much more to the fabric of our community by building connections between each other and keeping people active and healthy.
"Council remains committed to developing infrastructure that will inspire future generations of players to potentially develop into the next generation of Australian sportsmen and women."
The SEQ Liveability Fund is part of the $1.8 billion SEQ City Deal, a partnership between the Australian and Queensland governments and Council of Mayors (SEQ) to generate long-lasting benefits for the region.
"We sincerely appreciate every dollar of funding we receive as it helps to build and maintain local pools, roads, libraries, cycleways and parks that are vital for our vibrant, local communities," Mayor McDonald said.
