20,000 Aussie Families Gain Free Broadband

To help relieve cost of living pressures and to narrow the digital divide, the Australian Government has provided the School Student Broadband Initiative with an additional $4.9 million boost in funding, extending the program to mid-2028.

Building on the 20,000 families who have already signed up, this extension will allow up to 10,000 more eligible families to sign up to the initiative and access free internet over the National Broadband Network (NBN), with free services running for new and existing families until 30 June 2028.

To be eligible families and carers must:

  • have a child living at home enrolled in an Australian school
  • have no active broadband service over the NBN network in the last 14 days
  • live in a premises where they can access standard NBN services.

Once a family is found eligible, they are issued a unique voucher which they can redeem with one of the participating internet providers.

The free service begins from the day the service is activated until 30 June 2028 and is available across all NBN technologies.
