The 2022 Fall Graduation Ceremonies for Tokyo Tech students were held on September 22, 2022 on Ookayama Campus. Bachelor's, master's, and professional master's degree recipients were acknowledged in the morning, while doctoral graduates were honored in the afternoon. A total of 448 degrees — 104 doctoral degrees, 243 master's degrees, 10 professional master's degrees, and 91 bachelor's degrees — were conferred.
Due to preventive measures against COVID-19, in-person participants were limited to less than half of the capacity of the 70th Anniversary Auditorium, this fall's venue for the event. Approximately 200 students were present in the morning, while roughly 80 doctoral degree recipients joined President Kazuya Masu, other members of the Board, and guests at the venue in the afternoon. This was the first time in three years for doctoral students to receive their degrees directly from Masu.
Other students, family members, faculty, and friends were asked to experience the celebrations virtually via a livestream.
During his speeches, Masu congratulated the graduates on their efforts and expressed great hope regarding their upcoming achievements. "Your determination and flexibility to identify issues, create solutions, and yet always remain open to new alternatives will continue to take you further down the path of success," Masu stated. The president also encouraged the newest Tokyo Tech alumni to seek inspiration and support from their alma mater when faced with obstacles in the future.
At the morning ceremony, graduates were also offered congratulatory words by Institute of Innovative Research (IIR) Director-General Naoto Ohtake. Dean Masahiro Kuze from the School of Science provided his words of encouragement to doctoral students in the afternoon.
Tokyo Tech Alumni Association President Kiyoto Ido (Class of 1972, Department of Mathematics) also gave a short congratulatory speech at both ceremonies. He encouraged the graduates to harness their knowledge to contribute to world peace and development, maintain a broad, international perspective in their future endeavors, and continue to utilize the close ties developed with their Tokyo Tech peers.
After the conferral of degrees at the morning ceremony, valedictorian and master's degree recipient Riko Kashima from the Department of Chemical Science and Engineering spoke on behalf of the graduating students.
Valedictorian Ko-Bun Tei, who completed a doctoral degree in Architecture and Building Engineering, also gave a short speech in the afternoon on behalf of the graduating doctoral program students.
The Tokyo Tech community wishes all graduates and their families continued health and success.
