Thousands of children and young people across Tasmania will soon embark on countless adventures as part of this year's Premier's Reading Challenge.
This year's challenge runs until August 23 and, for the first time, will include our littlest readers in Kindergarten and our oldest in Years 11 and 12.
Premier Jeremy Rockliff said whether you're already an avid reader or just starting on your reading journey – pick up a book and join in the Challenge.
"It was wonderful to join a class of excited Kindergarten students at Lindisfarne Primary School, to read to them, and wish them well as they embark on their first reading challenge adventure," Premier Rockliff said.
"Fostering a love of reading is crucial for children, and we must do everything we can to encourage this habit.
"An important part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future is to lift literacy outcomes for all students and this Challenge emphasizes the importance of reading for children and families at home.
"Developing a love for reading isn't the only thing on offer as part of this year's Challenge, with exciting prizes, including book vouchers for submitted book reviews, up for grabs.
"Additionally, I encourage you to explore the many resources available at your local library or online at www.libraries.tas.gov.au, including books, e-books, comics, magazines, and more."
Reading engagement programs like the Premier's Reading Challenge are important as we undertake transformational change to the way Tasmanian Government schools teach reading.
Our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future commits an additional $3 million to extend literacy to all children in Years 3 to 6 by 2026.
