Leeton Shire Council approved six applications totalling $18,000 for funding assistance as part of the 2024/25 Local Heritage Places Grants Scheme at its November Ordinary Council meeting.

Under this annual Grants Program, funding is available for 'listed' heritage items in the Leeton Local Environmental Plan 2014 or for buildings supported by Council's heritage advisor as being of heritage significance.

The Local Heritage Places Grants for 2024/25 were advertised and open for applications from July to mid-October 2024.

Applications for funding assistance were received and considered by Council's Heritage Advisor Noel Thomson in conjunction with the Leeton Shire Council Heritage Committee.

The six applications approved by Council were: awning soffit replacement to match earlier part replacement at Pine Ave Shop ($5,000); external timber repair works and painting to Whitton farm residence ($2,500); repainting of weatherboards at front of house on Kurrajong Avenue, Leeton, and repainting to later added rear structure ($1,500); placement of water tank for water catchment at the "arts & crafts" pavilion at Leeton Showgrounds to address the building base deterioration ($2,500); restoration & installation of historic lighting at front of Wade Ave residence ($1,500); and external timber repair works at gable end and repainting of the south façade to the Historic "Hotel Hydro" ($5,000).

Chairman of the Leeton Shire Heritage Committee, Deputy Mayor Cr Michael Kidd, congratulated the owners on their successful applications.

"We extend our gratitude to the proactive owners who applied for this year's heritage grant program. The funding awarded will not only conserve significant heritage assets in our Shire but also have a wider positive impact for our community, such as improving Leeton's streetscape and complementing the recent redevelopment of the Chelmsford Town Square. The works also help to strengthen our position as the Art Deco Capital of Regional Australia," he said.
