2025 Federal Election Critical

31 December 2024. Michael Guerin, AgForce CEO.

The stark contrast between the policies of the major political parties across the important issues for our industry is becoming clear as we come closer to the upcoming 2025 election.

So much so, we find we have some real decisions to make from the political landscape.

It is crucial that we exploit these issues to ensure as far as possible that industry and community issues are the focus for political parties as they prepare for an election which could be called at any moment.

The major parties are signalling distinct policy priorities, and whilst their election platforms are not yet set, we can see some distinct themes emerging, particularly:

The Labor Party: a focus on sustainability and environmental stewardship. Labor's agenda includes stricter land management regulations and climate resilience programs. They also support enhanced worker protections and investment in rural health and education.

The Coalition: Traditionally supportive of market-driven approaches, the Coalition appears to be emphasising reducing regulatory burdens and enhancing trade access. Their policies promise continued investment in agricultural innovation and regional infrastructure.

The Greens and Crossbenchers: These groups are advocating for accelerated climate action, biodiversity protection, and stronger labour rights, which could reshape operational frameworks for producers.

Then we have specific issues of concern, such as the live export of sheep by sea - where the chasm between policies could not be wider. If Labor is re-elected the trade is gone, and if the LNP is elected the trade will be retained. We need to highlight these starkly opposing outcomes and get the ramifications of these in front of every Australian voter as best we can.

AgForce, as the Queensland State Farming delegate to the National Farmers Federation, will work hard to ensure Queensland's voice is heard loud and clear as our industry's requests are finalised and presented to all political parties in the lead up to election day.

Over and above that however, it is vital we recognise the importance and value of grassroots campaigning on the issues that matter to us, and the value that brings to an election.

So as the National Farmers Federation brings our industry 'asks' together, it is important we are all engaged in active conversations with local candidates, at local meetings and in the community where-ever we can ahead of voting day.
