Twenty-two Inner West pubs have now been added to the State Heritage Register which will protect these long-standing institutions and keep our community's famous pub culture alive.
These new heritage protections preserve the exterior of these historic pubs while also helping to prevent the demolition or removal of bars and interiors, safeguarding these community hubs for future generations.
This comes in addition to the twenty-six Inner West hotels that already had heritage protection.
The Inner West is home to some of Sydney's most iconic pubs. Whether it's the atmosphere, the food, the music, or the social connection, these listings will help to preserve the Inner West's thriving pub culture.
Inner West Mayor Darcy Byrne said, "In recent years, we've seen long-standing pubs targeted by developers for conversion to office space or residential. These heritage listings will help to send a message that if you buy a long-standing pub in the Inner West, you should be prepared to operate it as a pub.
"In our community, pubs have been a social hub for local residents for well over a century. Traditionally, many people have seen the bar at the local pub as an extension of their loungeroom.
"Our Inner West pub culture has been the breeding ground for some of Australia's best and most famous musicians and performers, and we want to make sure this continues into the future.
"We are committed to preserving and nurturing the pubs of the Inner West and their unique heritage."
