23 Charges After Tamworth Stand-off

A man is due in court today charged with 23 domestic violence, firearm and drug-related offences following an incident near Tamworth last week.

Officers from Oxley Police District were called to a property at Woolbrook, 65km north-east of Tamworth, about 5.30pm on Wednesday (1 January 2025), following reports of a domestic dispute.

Police had entered the property when – they will allege – a 61-year-old man pointed a double-barrel shotgun in their direction.

A perimeter was established with specialist officers called to the scene, who attempted to speak with the man. Police will allege the man discharged his firearm during the stand-off.

About 9.30pm, the man was taken into custody after a Taser was deployed by specialist police. He was taken to Tamworth Base Hospital for treatment.

Police established a crime scene and seized several firearms, including a loaded shotgun, firearm parts, ammunition, a crossbow, a hunting knife and cannabis.

The man was released into police custody yesterday and was taken to Tamworth Police Station where he was charged with 23 offences,

  • Stalk, intimidate intend fear physical etc harm
  • Use etc offensive weapon to prevent police investigation (two counts)
  • Fire firearm manner likely injure persons/property
  • Do act with intent to prejudice safety of aircraft or vessel
  • Possess loaded firearm public place
  • Carry firearm manner likely injure person/property
  • Hinder or resist police officer in the execution of duty
  • Not keep firearm safely-not pistol/prohibited firearm (three counts)
  • Possess a barrel without authority of licence/permit (three counts)
  • Possess unauthorised firearm
  • Possess unregistered firearm-not pistol/prohibited firearm (two counts)
  • Possess or use a prohibited weapon without permit (two counts)
  • Cultivate prohibited plant less than or equal to small quantity
  • Supply cannabis more than indictable and less than commercial quantity
  • Holder of Category A or B licence not have approved storage, and
  • Handle/use firearm under the influence of alcohol/drug.

He appeared via AVL in Parramatta Bail Court today (Saturday 4 January 2025) and has been formally refused bail until 3 March 2025 when he will reappear in Tamworth Local Court.
