- Cook Government announces funding for significant upgrades to electrical training facilities north and south of the river
- Funding will allow the Electrotechnology Training Institute to train an additional 4,500 students
- Capital Grants Program aims to boost the pipeline of skilled workers in building and construction by supporting private registered training providers to increase their capacity
The Cook Government has awarded $3.1 million for upgrades to electrical training facilities in Jandakot and Joondalup to help get thousands more tradies on the tools.
The funding will assist the Electrotechnology Training Institute to refurbish its building training facilities, enabling it to train an additional 450 students a year over 10 years.
The facilities in Jandakot and Joondalup specifically cater to people training in electrical trades, skills required for Western Australia to transition to renewable energy technologies.
The Electrotechnology Training Institute will also contribute $1.8 million of in-kind support for the project.
The $5 million Capital Grants Program is funded through the Construction Training Fund and assists successful applicants to upgrade their facilities and equipment so they can get more people into training.
It aims to maximise quality training for in-demand skills, such as electrical and plumbing, bolstering the skilled workforce to get more homes built, and creating a pipeline of workers needed for WA's clean energy transition.

As stated by Training and Workforce Development Minister Simone McGurk:
"We know we need more workers in building and construction - and as a Government, we are doing everything we can to get more tradies on the tools - whether it's investing in infrastructure upgrades, or offering fee-free training and financial incentives for apprentices.
"Electricians and instrument technicians are in big demand and will continue to be for some time. This funding will enable the Electrotechnology Training Institute to expand its capacity to train thousands more people for exciting jobs in building and construction.
"It will give even more Western Australians the opportunity to get the qualifications they need to take advantage of the many rewarding - and often high-paying - jobs we know are out there in building and construction.
"The message is clear: with our booming housing market and the huge demand for workers through the clean energy transition there has never been a better time to get into training."
As stated by Joondalup MLA Emily Hamilton:
"This is a significant investment that will allow the Electrotechnology Training Institute in Joondalup to train even more young people for jobs in building and construction.
"Quality training is so important, and these facilities will ensure a pipeline of workers in our northern suburbs for many years to come."
