30 New Police Recruits To Make Territory Safer

NT Government

Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro has welcomed 30 new police recruits to the Territory's ranks.

Recruit Constable Squad 158 began last week, and the group was sworn-in today at a ceremony in Berrimah attended by Mrs Finocchiaro.

The recruits will now start their 30-week training program, and graduate in June next year.

Five recruits have family connections within the force, including close relatives already serving in various roles.

"The recruits come from across Australia and bring diverse work experience, including backgrounds in disability support, nursing, retail, trades, firefighting, and marketing," said Mrs Finocchiaro.

"It's great to see so many local recruits in this squad, almost half.

"In the 10 weeks since forming Government, my CLP team has been clear on our intention to deliver on our commitments - and community safety has been at the top of that agenda.

"To reaffirm this commitment, I personally took on the Police portfolio as Chief Minister.

"In the first two weeks of parliament, we have introduced and now passed our Reducing Crime package aimed at giving police stronger legislation to allow them to perform their role and protect the people of the Northern Territory.

"I can promise all of our police officers that the CLP Government has your back."

Mrs Finocchiaro added: "We are committed to increasing police recruitment and work is well underway to finalise our new Police Retention Bonus, which will help retain our invaluable experienced members, while the ongoing recruitment is underway."

"We will continue to provide police with the resources, laws and support they need to get the job done," she said.
