$387K Boost for Active School Travel

  • 55 Western Australian schools to share in $387,000 as part of the State Government's Connecting Schools Grant
  • Grant packages between $1,000 to $20,000 awarded to improve active transport infrastructure, bike education and develop students' road safety skills
  • The Cook Labor Government is committed to making active travel more accessible for Western Australians

Dozens of schools across the State will share in $387,000 in funding towards upgraded bike and scooter parking, installation of bike repair stations and bike tracks, and bike skills and road safety education workshops.

The funding has been provided through the State Government's Connecting Schools Grant program, which runs annually and supports initiatives that encourage students and families to walk, wheel and ride more often.

Schools achieving positive active travel results through the program can apply for funding packages ranging from $1,000 to up to $20,000, offering practical assistance to increase capacity and encourage school communities to develop safe, healthy and sustainable travel habits.

A key priority of the Cook Labor Government is to make active travel accessible and widely accepted throughout Western Australia. This is being made possible through significant investment into walking and riding infrastructure, as well as more than $1 million invested as part of the Connecting Schools Grant scheme since 2018.

The Connecting Schools Grant is offered through a partnership between the Department of Transport and the Department of Education and continues to improve active travel trips, with rates among schools participating in the Your Move program at 46 per cent, compared to the State average of around 20 per cent.

As stated by Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:

"With bikes and scooters a popular gift over Christmas, this year's grants will ensure schools can improve active transport infrastructure to encourage families to use the trip to school as another opportunity to get out and about.

"Over the past 40 years, the national rate of walking and bike riding to school has declined from 75 to 25 per cent, and in Perth the rate can be as low as 20 per cent - but schools involved in the Your Move program are reversing this trend.

"By rolling out the Connecting Schools Grant, this Government is supporting more students than ever before to develop healthy and sustainable travel habits, that will set them up well for the future.

"Your Move is a fantastic program that Western Australian schools can sign up to for free. I encourage all schools to make it a priority for their back-to-school planning to join Your Move and support their communities to walk, wheel and ride more often."
