The new $18 million carpark in the Croydon Activity Centre was officially opened this week, by Federal Minister for Infrastructure Paul Fletcher, Federal Member for Deakin, Michael Sukkar and Mayor of Maroondah Councillor Mike Symon.
Cr Symon said the opening was very significant, as the carpark is the first of four carparks to open in Maroondah. All four have been fully-funded by the Australian Government and will be built in key activity centres within Maroondah.
"The new carpark in Devon Street Croydon provides 400 much needed spaces for commuter parking, along with parking for visitors to Main St and the Croydon Town Centre. This will be a huge benefit for the customers of the commercial, retail, hospitality and numerous other services and businesses in the precinct," Cr Symon said.
Cr Symon said another benefit of the carpark has been the significant employment it has generated during the design and construction.
"About 800 workers contributed their skills on site over the 12-month build. Additionally, there were more than 100 people who worked offsite to design, manage and contribute to the successful completion," Cr Symon said.
"And as a boost to our local economy, more than 95% of the project workforce was from Victoria and about 25% of those were from within a 15km radius of the site," Cr Symon said.
The building is sustainably designed, and includes electric vehicle charging stations and solar panels.
The Devon Street carpark is free to use and operates 7 days a week, from 6am to 10pm most days. The carpark was funded by the Australian Government and delivered by Maroondah City Council.
