45th Anniversary: Tehran U.S. Embassy Takeover

Department of State

Forty-five years ago today, followers of Ayatollah Khomeini stormed the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, taking American diplomats hostage for 444 days. We will never forget both the service of the brave American diplomats held in Tehran and the abhorrent treatment that they were subjected to by the Iranian regime.

Every day, American diplomats work to advance our interests in difficult and often dangerous conditions around the globe, and this somber anniversary is a reminder of the sacrifices they and their loved ones make. We remain clear eyed about the threats posed by the Iranian regime and will continue to work with our partners and allies to hold it accountable.
