5000 Cyclists Saddle Up In Fight Against Cancer

Five thousand cyclists are gearing up to fight cancer as part of this Sunday's Brisbane to Gold Coast Cycle for Cancer.

The mammoth field of riders will complete a 100km course stretching from South Brisbane to the Gold Coast's Broadwater, with cancer survivors, specialists and researchers among those taking part.

Among the pack will be Chris Hennessey, from Yeerongpilly in Brisbane's south, who is riding in honour of his wife Amy, who has battled cancer for more than two decades.

Mrs Hennessey, a Mater Private Hospital patient, was just 21 when she was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma, a rare cancer of the bones and surrounding soft tissues that most commonly occurs in children and young adults.

The now 42-year-old has undergone chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant, and has also battled bladder cancer.

Mr Hennessey, owner of The Outdoor Club Graceville, an outdoor fitness club, said he had to "prepare for the worst" on many occasions his wife was admitted to hospital.

On Sunday he will be riding with fellow friends also on a mission to help find a cure for cancer and raise awareness for cancer research.

"I am doing this ride in support of my wife Amy, who has been through more setbacks, surgeries and tough times than most people would face in three lifetimes," he said.

"We both know first-hand the difference funding and support can make to cancer patients across Queensland.

"Amy's determination to beat cancer is admirable and her courage and resilience is inspiring which is why I am ready to pedal and make a difference."

Mater Foundation Chief Executive Andrew Thomas said every dollar raised will go towards funding world-class cancer research and patient care initiatives at Mater.

"Around 450 people are diagnosed with cancer every day in Australia, and this event will power us towards a cure, making a difference for people now and into the future," Mr Thomas said.

The Brisbane to Gold Coast Cycle for Cancer will utilise a closed Brisbane South-East Busway to provide participants with a unique, safe riding experience, with parts of the course traffic-free.

Riders can choose from three distances – the 100km Brisbane to Gold Coast classic, 60km from Logan to the Gold Coast, or 40km from Brisbane to Logan.
