6,000 Jobs Lost, Youth Flee: Rockliff Must Change Course

Tas Labor

Tasmanian Labor stands for jobs.

That's why we're so concerned about the jobs and population data released yesterday by the ABS.

The data shows 570 jobs were lost in August as Jeremy Rockliff's Liberal Lambie Coalition fell apart, meaning nearly 6,000 jobs have been lost since he first started governing in minority.

Tasmania is the only state where jobs are being lost.

The unemployment rate is now the second worst in the nation, youth unemployment has soared to 12.2 per cent, and Tasmanians are giving up looking for work altogether.

And to make matters worse, it's also been revealed working age Tasmanians continue to leave for the mainland in record numbers. It's now more than two years since more people were moving to Tasmania than leaving.

Jeremy Rockliff himself said that minority government would crash jobs and crash the economy - and that's exactly what we're seeing.

The chaos, budget mismanagement and major stuff-ups occurring under Jeremy Rockliff's minority government has seen business confidence plummet.

In light of these concerning additional job losses, the Premier should:

  1. Make up for the lost revenue from the new Spirits stuff-up, by doubling the number of day sailings on the Spirits over summer
  2. Allow 2,000 new homes and a $500 million science and technology facility to be built, by dumping his anti-jobs, anti-development UTAS legislation; and
  3. Help $25 billion of stalled projects get moving, by giving the Coordinator-General real powers to cut through red tape and get things done
  4. Be open and honest about which infrastructure projects are being cut.

The data is clearly showing what minority government is doing to Tasmania's economy - and it isn't good. The Premier should change course before even more jobs are lost
