$600K Boost for Kalgoorlie Walking, Cycling Paths

  • Cook Government announces $592,000 for two shared path projects in Kalgoorlie
  • Funding will help better connect Kalgoorlie through active transport infrastructure
  • Funding has been allocated as part of the regional stream of the WA Bicycle Network Grants Program

The Kalgoorlie community will benefit from the next round of the State Government's Western Australian Bicycle Network (WABN) Grants Program, with nearly $600,000 being allocated to two new projects across 2024/25 - 2027/28 funding under the scheme.

The funding has been allocated through the regional stream of the program, with projects including:

  • $211,956 to construct stage 2, a shared path on Keenan Street from Piccadilly Street to Campbell Street. This project will continue from the existing shared path constructed as part of stage 1, funded by WABN; and
  • $380,583 to design and construct a shared path along Hay Street, between Gribble Creek Shared Path and Lane Street Shared Path. The route connects Kalgoorlie CBD and Usher Park, Rotary Peace Park, Centennial Park, and the Gribble Creek green belt through the city.

The WABN program provides essential connections within and between town sites and key local destinations and amenities, with the State Government providing up to half the funding for total project costs to local governments.

Since 2017, the Cook Labor Government has invested or allocated more than $600 million towards expanding WA's active transport network, supporting all Western Australians to walk, wheel and ride as part of their everyday journeys and experiences.

As stated by Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:

"We're committed to making our regional cities more vibrant and liveable, and access to high-quality walking and cycling paths is a key part of that.

"These two projects will make it easier to walk and cycle around Kalgoorlie, which will reduce the number of cars on the road."

As stated by Kalgoorlie MLA Ali Kent:

"I've heard loud and clear from the community the desire for more walking and cycling paths and this State Government funding will help deliver more than one million dollars of new projects in Kalgoorlie.

"Our Government will continue to focus on projects that improve the lives of Kalgoorlie residents and better connects our beautiful city."
