Another major multimillion-dollar road resurfacing and correction project has been locked in, further improving safety for South Australian motorists while adding to a long list of crucial upgrades already occurring across the state.
The Marshall Liberal Government is spending a whopping $17.9 billion – more than any other four-year period in the state's history – to reverse the former Labor Government's mismanagement of infrastructure and road transport.
Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Corey Wingard, said the latest works would occur on Majors Road at O'Halloran Hill – the section between the Southern Expressway and Main South Road.
"We are investing $7 million for upgrade works on Majors Road at O'Halloran Hill to resurface the road as well as improve safety and accessibility to the nearby parks and facilities," Minister Wingard said.
"The upgrade includes road resurfacing with some widening to ensure consistent width of the on-road bike lanes, improved access into the Riding for the Disabled facility and Glenthorne National Park-Ityamaiitpinna Yarta to add to area improvements.
"This will also include minor road widening for safer merging to improve westbound traffic near Main South Road.
"In addition, an extra $200,000 is being dedicated to Black Road for minor rectification works to fix potholes, improve subsurface drainage and generally boost its safety for motorists."
Construction will commence in January 2022 with completion anticipated by April 2022.
Design work is currently underway for:
- Potential signalised intersection at the junction of Major Road and Adams Road.
- Improvements at O'Halloran Hill Metropolitan Fire Service station.
- Better BMX park access.
"We inherited a severely neglected road network from the former Labor Government including a maintenance backlog of $750m," Minister Wingard said.
"But South Australians can rest assured, we are fixing that unacceptable backlog one road at a time because motorists deserve a smooth and safe journey every time they travel."
Member for Davenport, Steve Murray, said the latest round of upgrades is testament to the Marshall Government's commitment to boosting safety with better road infrastructure.
"Our local community welcomes this significant $7m upgrade to Majors Road," Mr Murray said.
"The drivers who travel these routes every day – and others just passing through – can expect a safe and smooth trip every time they venture through the southern suburbs.
"And it's fantastic to see Black Road will also be improved as part of this crucial upgrade package."
