7-Year International Stroke Study Concludes

The Prevention of Stroke in Intracerebral Haemorrhage Survivors with Atrial Fibrillation (PRESTIGE-AF) project has come to a close after 7 years.

On 28-29th November, the PRESTIGE-AF consortium met at Imperial College London for the project's final meeting. The project launched in 2017 and came to a close at the end of November.

Co-ordinated by Imperial College London and led by Professor Roland Veltkamp, Prevention of Stroke in Intracerebral Haemorrhage Survivors with Atrial Fibrillation (PRESTIGE-AF) is an EU-funded research project that brings together scientists and clinicians from 12 institutions across Europe to take a deep dive into the issues surrounding the treatment of ICH patients with AF.As members of the consortium gathered on the first day of the two-day meeting, a bittersweet atmosphere filled the air. After 7-years of collaboration on the project, this meeting would be the final time the consortium would meet together in person.

After a few coffees and pastries, Professor Veltkamp kicked off the day by welcoming the consortium to the beautiful 170 Queen's Gate on Imperial's South Kensington campus and extending a big congratulations for everyone's hard work over the years.

The consortium was then addressed by Professor Graham Cooke, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Imperial College London who spoke on the importance of collaborative research and congratulated the consortium on their achievements.

Across the two days, the consortium had the opportunity to engage in lively discussion, sharing updates and discussing the much-anticipated initial results of the project.

The final meeting not only allowed the team to reflect on their collective journey but also provided a special moment to celebrate the completion of a large clinical trial.

PRESTIGE-AF was supported by Imperial's Research Impact Management Office (RIMO) across the entire lifecycle of the project, providing both project management and communications and dissemination support. The team was behind the development of the PRESTIGE-AF 'Escape the Clinic' Escape Room which became the project's flagship engagement activity with over 500 people taking part in the activity by the end of the project.

Results from the project will continue to be made available, with key research and trial results expected to be published in early 2025. Keep an eye on the PRESTIGE-AF webpage for updates.
