The Albanese Government is turbocharging investment in Western Australia's industrial sector, with a major milestone achieved on the H2Kwinana Hydrogen Hub, supported by $70 million from the Albanese Government as part of its Regional Hydrogen Hubs program.
Today we can announce the project is now progressing to Front-End Engineering Design, bringing us one major step forward for the future of WA's hydrogen industry.
This investment will create regional jobs and help decarbonise the state's industrial sector, as WA embraces the opportunities of the clean energy transformation.
The H2Kwinana Hydrogen Hub is being led by bp Australia and will create 150 jobs. It will include a 100 MW electrolyser, with the potential to expand to a total of 1.5 GW production.
Site works for H2Kwinana are already underway, with construction expected to be complete in mid-2027.
When operational, it could produce over 14,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per annum for industrial use and heavy transport. This is equivalent to fuelling around 750 vehicles a year in Australia's heavy vehicle fleet.
The project involves the installation of hydrogen storage, compression and truck loading facilities and upgrades to the existing on-site hydrogen pipeline system.
The Albanese Government is investing over half a billion dollars in regional Hydrogen Hubs, including in the Pilbara, Kwinana, Gladstone, Townsville, the Hunter, Bell Bay and Port Bonython.
Australia's hydrogen industry is projected to generate $50 billion in additional GDP by 2050, creating tens of thousands of jobs in regional Australia as Australia transforms to a renewable energy superpower.
