On August 20, 2024, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense (DASD) for Western Hemisphere Affairs Ms. Jana Nelson chaired the 7th U.S.-Brazil Strategic Defense Talks with Rear Admiral Fernando De Luca Marques de Oliveira, Chief, International Affairs Section, Brazilian Ministry of Defense. The meeting took place at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.
The U.S. delegation included representatives from OSD, Joint Staff, U.S. Southern Command, U.S. Special Operations Command, New York National Guard, U.S. Embassy Brasilia, and the Institute for Security Governance.
The dialogue focused on global and hemispheric security issues, the thematic agenda for the October 2024 Conference of Defense Ministers of the Americas, and bilateral cooperation in emerging defense areas including cyber, space, and special operations. The delegations furthermore prioritized expanding synchronization of U.S. and Brazil defense industrial bases – as well as the concluding negotiation of the U.S.-Brazil Reciprocal Defense Procurement Agreement – a priority for both countries. They reaffirmed the importance of adhering to the highest standards of democratic values, the rule of law, and human rights in all aspects of the bilateral defense relationship.
The U.S.-Brazilian Strategic Defense Talks provides a strategic framework to guide the bilateral defense relationship and security cooperation. The forum is a mechanism to discuss strategic-level defense issues and to guide future cooperation activities in the areas of defense and security.
