$8M Victorian Center to Lead Health Economics Research

Deakin

Deakin University and VicHealth are joining forces to launch a world-leading research centre to explore interactions between our economy, commercial entities and health outcomes.

Deakin and VicHealth will each invest $4m over the next 5 years in the VicHealth Commercial and Economic Determinants of Health Research Translation Centre.

VicHealth CEO Dr Sandro Demaio said the new centre will further bolster Victoria's reputation as a world-leader in medical and health research.

'Together with Deakin and changemakers from industry, business and policy fields, the centre's research will be used to create better health policies, healthier communities and a higher quality of life for Victorians,' Dr Demaio said.

Executive Dean of Deakin's Faculty of Health, Deakin Distinguished Professor Rachel Huxley, said the focus on research translation makes the centre unique.

'Deakin is delighted to be partnering with VicHealth on this important new research centre,' Professor Huxley said.

'This centre is a blueprint for change. Unlike traditional research, it will involve community, business leaders and policy and communications experts to help identify problems and design research.

'The findings will be used to develop evidence-based solutions that drive policy change and inspire business models that support equity and the health of our planet and people.'

Located at Deakin University's Burwood campus, the VicHealth Commercial and Economic Determinants of Health Research Translation Centre will:

- engage researchers and a wide range of people from business, community and public sectors to co-design a research agenda and translation plan.

- produce an annual landmark science report and hold an annual research translation forum to share findings with stakeholders and hear more from the field.
