Established in 1954, Mawson Station is the oldest, continuously occupied Australian Antarctic station and Australia's first station south of the Antarctic Circle.
In 2004, the Australian Heritage Council listed Mawson Station as a Commonwealth Heritage place for its unique demonstration of the evolution of building methods in Antarctica, and insights into early station life.
The Australian Antarctic Division is developing a new heritage management plan for Mawson station and invites comment on the draft management plan from members of the public, key stakeholders, community groups and Indigenous people with an interest in the place (Regulation 10.03C, Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Regulations 2000).
The Draft Mawson Station Heritage Management Plan 2024 can be viewed online and comments submitted via the Department's consultation hub.
The closing date for public comment is 5:00pm AEDT, on 15 February 2024.
