The University of Helsinki has signed a joint declaration committing to advance the sustainability transition together with other parties active in the Finnish academic community and funders of research.
In a joint declaration drawn up by the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters, 12 universities, four foundations and nine other academic operators express their shared ambition to play a significant role as communities that carry out and support research in tackling global sustainability challenges.
As a signatory to the joint declaration, we are committed to developing management and leadership practices that support sustainability expertise, establishing structures that encourage sustainable operations and strengthening the societal impact of science and research.
We also pledge to promote social justice and develop common methods for monitoring and assessing the effects of research and teaching on biodiversity.
"The academic community plays a significant role in promoting the sustainability transition. For the University of Helsinki, this means not only seeking solutions to global challenges, but also examining the impact of our operations," says Vice-Rector Anne Portaankorva, who oversees sustainability and responsibility at the University.
The University of Helsinki has long held the promotion of sustainability and responsibility at the core of its operations. In collaboration with other academic operators, we can identify increasingly effective shared solutions to promote the sustainability transition.
The University of Helsinki also encourages other research organisations and funders to join the effort. Prospective signatories can join the joint declaration on the website of the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters.
