ACT Greens Call For Democracy For Union Members

Australian Greens

The following motion was agreed by the ACT Greens on Monday 16th September, 2024.

The ACT Greens note:

  • The ACT Greens 2024 Policy Platform, which includes the principles that unions should be "unencumbered by unreasonable regulation and outside interference in their right to organise working people and campaign for a better future" and that "it is up to members to decide how their union functions"

  • Concerns raised by the NSW Council for Civil Liberties about the Labor Government's CFMEU administration legislation, as supported by the Coalition, including that it is "far-reaching" and establishes a dangerous precedent for the trade union movement and the rights of individuals to "natural justice and procedural fairness."

  • Remarks by Australian Greens leader Adam Bandt, who described these as "draconian laws that threaten fundamental rights."

In light of the CFMEU being placed into administration, the ACT Greens reaffirm our support for independent, democratic unions and freedom of association for all union members.
