Up to 7,500 ACT households will benefit from energy upgrades under the Social Housing Energy Performance Initiative (SHEPI).
The Australian Government is investing $12.9 million to install rooftop solar and batteries in thousands of social housing properties across the ACT.
These solar and battery systems will be connected to a Virtual Power Plant (VPP). VPPs connect and combine renewable energy resources virtually to form their own power plant.
By joining a VPP, households can save on energy bills. VPPs also:
- reduce pressure on the grid
- cut down on emissions.
This latest announcement is the next step in ensuring ACT social housing residents have access to the benefits of the energy transition following on from electrification and insulation work completed and funded from SHEPI and the ACT's Home Energy Support: Social Housing Program. This means that ACT social housing homes be warmer in winter and cooler in summer and will be cheaper to run.
The announcement comes as part of the $500 million expansion of the initiative announced in November 2024.
The Australian Government is working with all states and territories on the SHEPI Expansion. Some states and territories will build on and expand existing programs. Others will launch pilot programs designed to scale to expand over time.
