Action Needed To Keep Water Users Safe This Summer

Liberal Party Victoria

As the weather warms up and Victorians flock to beaches this coming summer, Victoria Police must be supported to enforce marine safety regulations and laws.

Instances of injuries, damage and close calls are all too common as irresponsible jet ski users put other water users at risk by breaching rules, including speed limits, and minimum distance requirements to people, wildlife and other watercraft.

Despite being responsible for enforcing Victoria's marine safety rules, Victoria Police's Water Police Squad has not been adequately supported to crack down on jet ski riders who openly flout the rules.

Shadow Minister for Boating and Fishing, Roma Britnell, said: "Marine safety rules are not being enforced and this puts other water users, wildlife and property at risk.

"As we enter the busy summer period, the Allan Labor Government must actively ensure this is the safest summer possible for all Victorians."

Shadow Minister for Police, Brad Battin, said: "Labor has failed to adequately resource Victoria Police to enable them to do their job of keeping Victorians safe in the water.

"Labor cannot manage money, cannot manage water safety and Victorians are paying the price."
