16 Monash schools have signed up to the inaugural Actions for Earth: Schools Sustainability Challenge.
A Sustainable Monash initiative, the challenge is designed to encourage, acknowledge and celebrate local schools and their environmental actions.
Actions focus on general sustainability, waste and recycling, water, energy and biodiversity and gardening.
Prizes are awarded to all participating schools along with the announcement of a 'Hero School' who will be recognised in the Monash Bulletin.
Actions
- Book a free Monash Council education/incursion session
- Undertake a free Monash Council or Resource Smart Audit session
- Hold your own community working bee (for example, garden maintenance, planting, litter pick up)
- Create a student and/or parent Sustainability Team.
- Deliver a sustainable presentation at assembly (Council, staff or student led)
- Publish a sustainable news item. (Council, staff or student led)
- Create sustainability posters for school (for example, what goes in which bin, nature/native wildlife, save water, turn off lights)
- Introduce recycling co-mingled
- Introduce food waste recycling and/or composting
- Nude food day/week/month
- Introduction of alternative recycling
- Collection programs (for example, batteries, Container Deposit Scheme.)
- Clean Up Day (any day of the year or create a Clean Up event with Clean Up Australia)
- Tree and/or habitat planting
- Veggie patch planting and maintenance
- Add or create habitat structure (for example, bird bath, lizard lounge, frog bog, nest box)
- Water saving signage or infrastructure
- Walk to School or Ride to School days
- Anti-idling school zones (turning off cars)
- Water or energy resource smart modules
